About

The National Institute of Chemistry employs 465 people, with approximately 405 involved in research across 8 departments and 3 infrastructure centers. Of these, 192 hold doctoral degrees in science. The institute focuses on both basic and applied research, specializing in materials science, life sciences, biotechnology, chemical engineering, structural and theoretical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and environmental protection. These research areas align with the needs of domestic and international industries, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, automotive, and nanobiotechnology.

Research at the institute is dedicated to developing new technologies and products that contribute to the long-term development of Slovenia and are internationally relevant. Industry plays a key role as a partner in these initiatives, with numerous Slovenian companies engaged in close, long-term cooperation, as well as well-regarded foreign firms. The National Institute of Chemistry provides cutting-edge research equipment, enabling researchers to tackle world-class research challenges. Currently, 130 graduate students are enrolled in the national Young Researchers Program, working toward their PhD degrees. These young researchers represent about 34% of the institute’s staff, making the National Institute of Chemistry one of the leading organizations in Slovenia for graduate-level education and training.
